Rug Cleaning St Ives

Persian rug inspected before choosing between steam cleaning and rug washing

The short answer: sometimes, but it's rarely the best choice for a hand-knotted Persian rug. Carpet "steam cleaning" (hot water extraction) can work for some colourfast, low-pile, machine-made or synthetic rugs when a trained technician does it carefully. For most Persian, wool, silk and antique rugs, specialist rug washing is safer and more thorough. It removes dry soil first, flushes contamination out of the foundation, and dries the rug under controlled conditions. The right method always depends on the rug's materials, construction and condition. Not sure about yours? Call 1300 310 410 for free advice.

First, What Does "Steam Cleaning" Actually Mean?

Most online advice on this question gives a flat "never" or an easy "yes". Neither is quite right, and part of the confusion is the name itself.

  • "Steam cleaning" is usually hot water extraction. Hot water and detergent are sprayed into the pile and vacuumed back out with a wand, from a portable machine or a truck-mounted unit. It's designed for wall-to-wall synthetic carpet cleaned on the floor.
  • True steam is rarely used on rugs. Handheld steamers are sometimes used for spot work. They're not a way to clean a whole rug.
  • Rug washing is a different process. The rug goes to a rug cleaning facility, where dry soil is removed first. The whole rug is then washed through the pile and foundation, rinsed, and dried under controlled conditions.
  • Low-moisture rug dry cleaning is a third option. It suits rugs that may not tolerate full washing, such as some silk, viscose and dye-sensitive pieces.

Why Steam Cleaning Can Be Risky for Persian Rugs

The risk isn't that wool can't be cleaned with water. Persian rugs have always been washed. The risk is how much heat and moisture go in, where they end up, and how slowly they come out.

Risk What happens
Dye bleeding Vegetable dyes and older synthetic dyes may not be colourfast. Hot water and alkaline carpet detergents can make reds and blues run into lighter areas.
Moisture in the foundation The wand recovers water mostly from the surface. Water left in a dense cotton or wool foundation leads to musty odours, mildew and slow drying.
Browning and wick-back As a rug with a cotton foundation dries slowly, soil and compounds from the cotton wick up into the pile and leave brown or yellow marks, especially on light fields and fringes.
Shrinkage and distortion Wet cotton foundations can shrink unevenly, leaving a rug rippled, buckled or with wavy edges.
Dirt left behind Grit near the foundation that isn't removed first turns to mud inside the rug. The surface may look brighter, but the grit is still there.
Silk and viscose damage Silk can lose sheen or water-mark. Viscose loses strength when wet and can distort permanently. See rug dry cleaning Sydney.
Already steam cleaned, and now seeing colour run, brown marks or a musty smell? Don't clean it again. Call 1300 310 410 as soon as possible. Early treatment gives the best chance of correcting the damage.

When Steam Cleaning May Be Suitable

Steam cleaning isn't always wrong. Hot water extraction by a trained technician can be a reasonable choice when:

  • the rug is synthetic (polypropylene, polyester or nylon), or a colourfast, machine-made wool rug
  • the dyes have been tested and are stable
  • the pile is low and the foundation can dry quickly
  • the rug only needs light maintenance, not removal of urine, mould or heavy soil
  • the room has good ventilation and the rug can be lifted to dry

When Specialist Rug Washing Is the Better Choice

  • Hand-knotted Persian and Oriental rugs
  • Antique, heirloom or valuable rugs
  • Rugs with natural or unstable dyes
  • Rugs with pet urine, mould, flood damage or strong odours
  • Rugs that have never been professionally cleaned, or that hold heavy embedded soil
  • Rugs with cotton foundations or fringes that tend to brown

How We Wash Persian and Wool Rugs

1 Inspection. We check the fibre type, construction, stains, odours, wear and existing damage.
2 Dye stability testing. We test the colours before washing to reduce the risk of bleeding or migration.
3 Dry soil removal. The rug is dusted from the back on a dusting grid, then vacuumed with a HEPA-filter vacuum.
4 Pre-treatment. We treat stains, odours and contaminated areas according to the rug's condition.
5 Controlled washing. We wash with WoolSafe-approved products and adjust the pH and temperature of the solutions to suit the rug.
6 Rinsing and water removal. We rinse residue away and carefully extract excess moisture.
7 Controlled drying and final inspection. We dry the rug in our drying room with managed airflow and humidity, then check it before return.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I steam clean my Persian rug at home?

We don't recommend it. Hire machines put a lot of water into the pile, recover only part of it, and don't remove dry soil or test dyes first. Those are the conditions that lead to colour run, browning and lingering odour in hand-knotted rugs.

Will steam cleaning kill dust mites and bacteria in my rug?

Heat can reduce them on the surface, but mites, allergens and bacteria also live in the foundation. Thorough washing and proper drying deal with the whole rug. See hypoallergenic rug cleaning.

My rug was steam cleaned and now has brown marks. Can that be fixed?

Browning and wick-back can often be improved with the right treatment and controlled drying. The sooner the rug is assessed, the better. Call us before you try cleaning it again.

Is steam cleaning safe for wool rugs?

Wool is resilient and can tolerate careful hot-water cleaning. The bigger risks come from the dyes, the foundation and slow drying. A colourfast machine-made wool rug is very different from a hand-knotted Persian with natural dyes.

Is rug washing more expensive than steam cleaning?

Usually, yes, because it involves more steps, more handling and a dedicated facility. For a valuable handmade rug, that cost is small compared with repairing colour run, shrinkage or browning. Call 1300 310 410 for a free quote.

What about my shag or high-pile rug?

Long-pile rugs carry their own steam cleaning risks, depending on the fibre. See shag and high-pile rug cleaning.
